This book was alright. The last half was more entertaining than the first. I didn’t particularly care for either main character. When I learned that Levenseller was writing a companion novel about Chrysantha, I wasn’t too thrilled because I hated her in The Shadows Between Us. She was better in this book because we learn that the way she acted in the first book was all an act. The love interest was nothing special and was lowkey kinda cringy at times. I didn’t like that he confessed over a letter (it’s giving saying “I love you” for the first time over text). I know it was for the sake of the plot, but I wish it could’ve been in-person. I just think it would’ve been more impactful/convincing if he had confessed to Chrysantha face-to-face. However, I did like that they were both completely honest with each other at the end and talked it out (let’s go communication).

I did like the mystery element even though it was pretty easy to figure out. I also liked Kyros and Nico’s role in the story.

Honestly, I don’t remember much of The Shadows Between Us so I don’t know if I like it more or less than this one. This is part of the reason why I gave them the same rating. I also just feel like this book is a solid 3 stars without comparing the two.

I have been on a mission to finish series that I have started over the years and I rememeber loving the Shadows between us and being sad at the time that it was a stand alone. So it was a happy surprise when i was perusing my unfinished series that there was another book to it.

I loved this book and that it was a different persepective, it was a completely different vibe than the first and I was totally here for it. The characters were so different, cunning in such a different way. I kind of think i liked this one more?? Even though i adored the first one.

It reminded me a little bit of the shepard king duology with the way that you get different persepectives in the second book but are still really well tied to the first book. It had such a good atmosphere and could really see the Manor/estate in my mind and could really feel Chrysantha's disappointment when the MMC enters the picture after such a hard slog at life up to that point. I also love a good strong FMC that doesn't take shit from men. totally would recommend this book and series.

I believe I enjoyed this more than The Shadows Between Us because it does not take long for the mystery to begin and I’m left wanting to know more as the story continues.
