🌶 Spice Level 2/5

I really liked it! Sure, the beginning wasn’t great since the main character was losing, but it was worth it. And the fact that she made up with her sister—sooo satisfying. Honestly, it was so good.

when i started this book i didn’t know what it was about - i just loved the first book so i was excited for more. i didn’t realize it was about crysantha, so at first i was like ugh i don’t care she sucks (from the last book)! but even as i tried to dislike her, her reasoning for being the way she was drew me in, and i ended up loving her so much. also the TENSION was so real, the bickering gave me life. touch her and die? check. when he gives her a gift?? PLEASE i was screaming. thoroughly enjoyed

Had potential to be a 5 star read but there were some elements I didn’t like.

Crysantha is a very progressive and worldly feminist. When her old, creepy husband dies she decides she wants to have her first time with a male prostitute. She also chooses to rotate through all the male prostitutes to see what she likes. This happens off-page but I still found it off putting. I know, how sexist of me. I would find this off pudding if it were a man as well. Those are just my beliefs/morals. She then tries to get Eryx to go to a brothel, which he thankfully refuses to go through with. I just found this story to be too lust-filled. Especially for YA.

Crysantha, unfortunately, was a harder character to like. I found her to be a little arrogant and entitled. I know how hard it used to be for women in that time so I was trying to be graceful of Crysantha’s attitude but it did get a little tiring. There’s a way to depict and discuss these issues in an inspiring and uplifting way but it just came across as bitter and hateful. I know that sounds harsh.

However, I do have to say, Levenseller is an excellent storyteller, making it an easy and fun read even if I didn’t like some of the material.

I also love that Crysantha and Alessandra are becoming true sisters. I really enjoyed their dynamic and seeing their relationship bloom. I actually think a novella with both sister’s POVs could be really fun!

Eryx is also, like, the perfect man! So it was fun to read about him as well!

I know this was kind of a negative review but I really did enjoy the story altogether! I read it quickly and didn’t want to put it down! Hence the 4 star rating!

It was entertaining and I felt very different from the first book. I'm glad the two sisters had very different personalities
