I didn’t realize this was loosely based on R Kelly because I added it to my tbr so long ago. Really powerful message but also hard to read. The audiobook is incredible as Jackson’s books always are.

it was hard to get into at first, because enchanted’s narration wasn’t really powerful to me, but when it picked up… OMG. i read most of it in a single sitting. the last chapter was a bit confusing but it’s a really powerful, striking book, with a lot of emotional plot twists and a good mystery. possibly triggering topics, though.

“My wounds are invisible, weeping invisible blood. Can anyone see the black-and-blue marks painted on my heart?”

I really enjoyed this. It was really hard to read at times, but I also couldn’t stop reading it. It’s such an important book and it was really interesting to read from the perspective of a character who has been a victim of abuse and other trauma. I loved the commentary on believing survivors. I loved the inclusion of mental health and how that plays a role in believing survivors. This book made me sad and angry and that’s what it was supposed to do. The part where her dad was cutting her hair and she broke down crying thinking everything was her fault really got me. It was one of those moments where you just want everything to be okay for a character. At the end of the book Enchanted saved herself and too many times in our society survivors are forced to save themselves too. I loved the side comments from outside characters. I feel like it really accurately portrayed the discourse that occurs around situations like this. Overall, this story broke my heart, but I’m glad I read it.

“You gotta speak up. If not for you, then for the next you, ‘cause there’s gonna be one if you let people think they can get away with hurting you.”

Extremely enraging, disturbing, disgusting, and triggering. This is the kind of book that would make you ruminate on your own experiences because of how familiar and relatable the situations and characters are.

Grown sheds some light on the dangers, consequences, and challenges of not being able to easily escape an abusive relationship. While from a reader’s or audience’s perspective, it’s easy FOR US to see the red flags, but it’s tough when you’re on the receiving end of the abuse and manipulation.

The whole story was so masterfully crafted and calculated that I found myself ALSO not knowing what to believe anymore. “Was Enchanted really the one who killed Korey?” “Oh no was it the dad?” “WHO REALLY KILLED KOREY THEN?” The way this had me questioning the whole time just makes Tiffany Jackson a master storyteller for me.

But please, PLEASE read the trigger warnings prior to picking this book up.

Trigger/Content Warnings: sexual abuse, statutory rape, kidnapping, abusive relationship, child abuse, grooming, gaslighting, manipulation, adult/minor relationship, victim-blaming/shaming, addiction to opioids, murder, suicide
