I don't typically read straight up, non-YA fiction. I usually read fantasy novels, mysteries, or, well, YA fiction. But I work with Tara and was curious to check out her fiction writing.

I’ll be honest. I had no idea where this book was headed. 75% of the way into it I was still wondering where the plot was going. This was when my husband reminded me that some writing focuses on character development. Ohhhhh yeah. I am a shameful excuse of a lit major.

So world building. It's a real world, but Tara creates it well.

The story is a gentle romance about an unusual family and a girl who grows up in it. As I grew to learn more family secrets, I grew increasingly reluctant to set my book down. I can't quite say why. There is always one more oddity to discover and wonder about.

I suppose that was my favorite thing about this book. I had a constant question mark upon my brow as I repeatedly tried and failed to guess at where the girl's life is headed. You kept me guessing, Tara, through to literally the very end.

Clean, simple writing that helps to convey the sense of character.

Bottom line: I liked it! A great choice for those looking to live alongside a little girl as she grows up. A gentle and curious read about family.

P.S. Special mention for the acknowledgments, which I found to be particularly thoughtful and well-written. Random, I know.
