Mehhhhhhhhhhh.

This book had potential: the story idea was actually interesting and the writing style is good, however it was kind of ruined by a few things. NOTHING happens for over 200 pages of this book. The plot is solved so easily and in 50 pages at the end, it feels like a throwaway plot or basically just an excuse to justify writing about these particular characters. It just feels solved waayyyy too easily and then there were no real events. Also I feel like having a clinical psychologist and a 'hacker' on the same team is the easy way of saying 'i'll describe your killer AND get the evidence I need' without having to think of a clever way of getting any evidence or even a plot. Also there was so much continuation from the past stories that while I don't think you would struggle to understand the story without reading the past books, you might actually enjoy it when reading past ones.

Too much cartoonish misogyny, team-building minutiae, and huge leaps of faith resulting in implausible progress in the central case. Too little actual construction of that potentially interesting case, or believable police work to solve it. I have to think there are better books in this series, since it produced Wire in the Blood, an excellent television drama, but this book was not particularly compelling.

This book resets everything, or so it seams. We get back to the way things were when readers were first introduced to the characters and fell in love with the series. Of course, that all depends upon the next book.

Carol Jordan has a chance of redemption and getting her old life back, which she takes with the help of Tony Hill. Their first case as a new unit is a case that isn't even a case. No apparent crime has been committed, except in the mind of Tony. Proving there is a case is the first step and then solving a series of suicides is the next.

It makes for an exciting read and the growing of the characters is welcomed. Well worth reading.

I enjoyed this one, especially since the violence was MUCH LESS graphic than most of her previous works. I'm a little tired of the advancing/retreating relationship between Carol and Tony, but the other characters are interesting.

I never thought I'd see the day, but I couldn't finish this latest instalment in the Tony and Carol series by McDermid. Historically, I have greatly enjoyed the series, but this one just didn't do it for me. I writing felt awkward and was too instructional about social media trolls. I also felt that the storyline seemed too contrived at times. Sorry, Val. I tried, I really did, but I finally gave up on page 183.
