Fifty Words for Snow by Nancy Campbell

Enjoyable to dip in and out of, but surprisingly dry. Seeing as how the author is a poet, I was hoping for some linguistic sparkle, some word play or more of a visual feast. Certainly an interesting selection of words, and the cultural details (all the different kinds of Mongolian 'zud', Welsh farmers in Patagonia, the Inca roads) fire up the imagination, but the chapters are really too slight to take off fully, and some end very abruptly. Perhaps it's something to dip into now and again rather than read from cover to cover.

A book that benefits from only reading only a few chapters in one session. These micro stories relating to snow could fit snuggly at bedtime as a result. Some stories are more interesting than others, so I struggled in some places to focus

I enjoyed this. I read it in small snippets over a few weeks - easy to do as each entry is only a page or two long. Some really interesting stuff about different countries and cultures, as well as interesting stuff about language. I particularly liked the Japanese snow woman myth and have ended up getting a collection of Japanese ghost stories including that one!

Ah, I really enjoyed this!

Bite-sized histories and information about snow and it’s impact around the world written beautifully and accessibly. It was a fascinating journey to go on.

I thought the purpley-blue font was a refreshing change. It seems like such a small thing but it was neat!

I liked how we also got to feel the impacts of climate change on different ways of life and communities across the world. People don’t seem to understand the knock-on effect that global warming is having and why it’s imperative we make a change now. I fear that the winters of my childhood truly are going to become a thing of the past; it’s heartbreaking when something has such a profound impact in your formative years and gets relegated to memory in a matter of two decades.

I highly recommend this book. It’s got something that everyone can enjoy and I can guarantee that you’ll learn something new.
