3.25 stars This was a short story. Reminded me of Long Way Down and The Ballad of Perilous Jones

The characters come to life giving brief glimpse of inner turmoil that leads to outer struggles and the transformation of the protagonist into something society tell him he is and also something they'll never be able to understand.

Hmm. I don't know how I should rate this one. It's a weird, engaging, interesting, and disturbing Lovecraftian tale set in 1920s Harlem and Brooklyn. I'm not familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's books (nor do I want to be), so I didn't know upon reading The Ballad of Black Tom that this is a spin on Lovecraft's The Horror at Red Hook. I really enjoyed LaVelle's vivid writing. I wish this book was a novel instead of a novella, however. There's so much more I wanted to know. Where do we go from there?

The best thing about a boring book that's 149 pages long is that it's not a 150-page long book.
