SKY COYOTE, the sequel to IN THE GARDEN OF IDEN, is one of those rare sequels that actually enhances the first book in the series. (Another example of this is INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE and THE VAMPIRE LESTAT.)
The point of view character this time is Joseph, who was a more minor character in IDEN. Mendoza, the protagonist of the first book, is here relegated to "supporting character." (This is just one of the many interesting authorial tricks Baker uses over the course of the novel.) The action is this book concerns Joseph's efforts to "save" a tribe of California Indians so they can be brought into the future, and the problems he faces in convincing them it's a good idea without corrupting their culture.
Joseph is actually a more compelling protagonist because of his long history with the mysterious time-crossing "Company" that employs them both, and this book begins to build on those mysteries, offering several interesting hints at future events and revealing several secrets from the distant past.
I very much enjoy this series, and recommend it heartily!

Funny and elegiac—an engaging combination. Kage Baker is still growing on me as an author, but she sure is fun to read.

Took me a bit to get into this, but once I did it was really funny. Plenty to think about too.

I've picked up Baker's books before, but never managed to finish one. Definitely going to seek out the rest of the series now.
