First book I have read by this author and will definitely read more. Her style reminds me of Faye Kellerman. The novel takes place in Southern Arizona.

I enjoy the Joanna Brady series and this was no exception. EXCEPT: That we are supposed to believe that Joanna doesn't give her husband even one chance to explain a seemingly compromising situation is completely beyond belief. Here is a woman who is usually able to see both sides of a situation and now makes a ridiculous assumption and then never stops long enough to reconsider. A waste of many pages. There was an attempt to blame it on all the other stuff going on but that was weak.

In spite of that, another good book by J.A. Jance.

This is one of two books I found during the move that my mother had sent me years ago. When we lived in Germany, anything in English was fair game for reading material (I've read some real pieces of crap because of it) and we both got addicted to J. A. Jance's mysteries. She's got two series: J. P. Beaumont, of Seattle, and Joanna Brady, of Cochise County, AZ.

This was just like any other Joanna Brady (or JAJ) novel: a quick read, impossible to put down, and follows the same general story arc.

After reading through about a third of it, I realized I'd already read it, but couldn't remember exactly what happens, so I kept reading. It's not as good as it was the first time through. Joanna Brady is one of my first feminist role models, though I certainly didn't know it at the time, and I'm not sure what my mom might think of that. When I wanted to be an FBI agent, I knew that it would never be like the X-Files, but somehow, I thought it might be like one of Jance's mysteries.

Brady is a classic feminist stereotype: a single mom thrust into the man's world of law enforcement. At the beginning of this book, she cleans out other local sheriffs in a poker tournament and donates the proceeds to her daughter's Girl Scout troop.

All in all, not bad for trashy fiction, but not worth the reread.

Good. Joanna's daughter & a fellow Girl Scout discover a dead body. Two nights later the other Scout is found dead as well. Turns out to be unrelated but the crux of the main story is a little shaky. There was one big jump in the conclusions that was very unrealistic. Oh, well, I do still like the character.

J.A. Jance's Joanna Brady is always extraordinary yet relatable. In Paradise Lost she finds herself dealing with not one but three murders inside of a week in her extensive but sparsely populated county of Arizona. With grit and brains she solves all of the murders while also dealing with family crises.
