Star Wars The Clone Wars Volume 4 collects eight stories that take place just prior to, during, and just after Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The Clone Wars are reaching their conclusion and the Jedi are still not anticipating what is to come, hopeful that the end of the war is just ahead.

Star Wars: Free Comic Book Day 2005 Special (2005) (19 BBY) 5/5: 31.5 months after Geonosis and 4.5 months before the Battle of Coruscant. A short comic centering around Obi-Wan and Anakin on a mission. This one is all about their closeness as friends and brothers. They talk about what they’ll do after the war is won (oww my heart). It’s also discussed that clearly the two of them are being targeted, but why would that be? This comic also leads right up to where they are in Labyrinth of Evil. A good comic that once again makes you wish Revenge of the Sith could have turned out differently! What would life for the galaxy and particularly these two Jedi have been like if Anakin hadn’t fallen to the dark side?

Darth Maul – Son of Dathomir 1-4 (2014) (19 BBY) 3/5: A storyline meant to continue in episodes of The Clone Wars before Disney cancelled it. Here is what happened to Darth Maul after his battle with Sidious on Mandalore. A pretty good story that definitely would have been better as episodes of The Clone Wars (after all I could Sam Witwer’s voice every time Maul spoke) with Lucas still at the helm. It incorrectly says that Mother Talzin is Maul’s actual mother and that Sidious ‘stole him away’. Part of me wants to read it as Talzin rewriting events for Maul was too young to know the truth. But the other part of me is led to believe that they saw the title ‘Mother’ and just went ‘oh she must be Maul’s mother’ despite it being the Nightsisters’ tribe leader’s title, for the book ‘Darth Plagueis’ and the short story ‘Restraint’ found in ‘Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter’ tell us all about Maul’s true mother. I did like seeing more of Maul’s time with the Mandalorians and his Shadow Collective. The ending does seem to set up Palpatine’s crackdown on Dathomir and making sure the witches can never leave the planet again as seen in ‘The Courtship of Princess Leia’. The art is pretty good, the covers are amazing.

Sithisis – Visionaries (2005) (19 BBY) 1/5: Another mind-warp from ‘Visions’. The cover art is really cool but the art inside is wild and hard to follow. I think it involves Sidious communing with the dark side and seeing the future he is plotting to put into motion.

Siege of Saleucami – Issues 74-77 (2005) (19 BBY) 5/5: 36 months after Geonosis. What a fabulously executed culmination of the Quinlan Vos arc along with many other characters we’ve seen in this whole Republic run of comics. I was immediately pulled into the action and character depth; I never knew what was going to happen. And wow that bomb dropped at the end was just wow; I wonder where it will lead! A brilliant lead-in to Revenge of the Sith!!

Episode III – Revenge of the Sith 1-4 (2005) (19 BBY) 5/5: The comic adaptation of Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. The story hits all the main points while also including some deleted scenes and expanding on a few others. There is also a line mentioning ‘The Siege of Saleucami’ comic arc! The art is beautiful to look at. It was a great read even while at the same time hurting to once again have to watch the terrible endgame of the Clone Wars come to fruition.

The Hidden Enemy – Issues 81-83 (2006) (19 BBY) 5/5: This story takes place during and just after Episode III. Quinlan and Luminara team up to help the Wookies on Kashyyyk before and after Yoda arrives. A look at what it was like after Order 66 was executed, but when the clones weren’t completely successful in killing their general. It’s so heart-wrenching to watch the clones hunt those they once worked side by side with. It was a fabulous end to the Republic series of comics.

Tag & Bink: Revenge of the Clone Menace (2006) 5/5: Part of the Infinities, non-canon storyline. These two usually find themselves amongst major events in the Star Wars universe, often causing some problem that has major consequences. I actually quite enjoyed this one. The humor was quite good as were the different jokes they put in the background art. The art itself wasn’t too bad either.

A Death Star is Born – Tales 4 (2000) 5/5: What a funny little story of how Tarkin presented the Death Star (named at this meeting) to Palpatine. Definitely non-canon, my favorite part was them talking about the security hazards going on with the project.

What a way to wrap up the Clone Wars era, which for so many years had been nothing more than a line in A New Hope. It had everything you could want; it introduced new characters with excellent storylines that have you caring about them as much as any character present in the movies, and also included plenty of action. I loved all the discussions the different characters had about what they would do or what would happen once the war was won. While we never got to see this reality, it was interesting to ponder these ‘what ifs’.
