Now if you truly choose your glory should be known, attack another heart more stubborn than my own. This Hippolyte flees you; defying your decrees, he never sees your shrine nor kneels down on his knees. ~ Jean Racine

My first Racine. I read it twice in one sitting. An furious and engaging tragedy. All of the characters are complex and compelling as they move through anxiety, shame, desire, and fear. The tumult of power lingers in the background but only becomes material as a pawn in unspeakable love triangles. I loved it. The end is satisfying and articulates a wonderful tragic balance.
This is the good stuff.
