This is a book with an interesting composition. It's set up as a documentary/interview style of a band's journey. As a horror novel I think the structure works well but it is a pretty tame book. It's extremely character-focused and I loved that there was so much character complexity and development. I enjoyed that it was more reflective rather than flashy. It does have a good amount of action but it is very much about the music and characters being drawn into and then affected by the antichrist's orbit rather than a huge battle against evil for the entire story.
Personally I think that audio is the absolute best way to read this. It felt like listening to an actual documentary and it is fully casted. And if music is not your thing, the audio is not filled with actual music. I ended up purchasing the audiobook myself to read along with my ARC.
Disclosure: I received a free ARC from Run For It (publisher).

Thank you to Hachette Audio for the ALC!
This book was great in theory, not great in practice. It had everything that I would enjoy - an enemy you can rally behind, music/band camaraderie, and a battle of the bands event of the century. I really did enjoy the format this was told in. It had musical lyrics and lots of interviews told by each character. The full audio cast was delightful! This fell short in grabbing my full attention though. The action took a long time to get there, it was far fetched (I know, it’s the antichrist), and I just didn’t fall in love with any of the characters. Overall, unfortunately lackluster, though it had lots of promise.

⭐⭐⭐
In my Ex, The Antichrist, we follow a very particular premise, a memoir-like story merged with the element of having the Antichrist as your ex-boyfriend and bandmate. Though the plot caught my attention at first glance, I was a bit let down by the execution. The best part of the novel was, in my opinion, how alive the characters felt (in part due to the full-cast audiobook; I highly recommend it!). Each member of the band and other characters felt pretty different from each other, and pretty early on it was easy to differentiate each of their character voices. The plot execution was entertaining, but the pacing felt off, and I wasn't completely satisfied by the end we were given.
Overall, required reading for people who have asked themselves, what would it be like if Kira from Death Note wanted to accomplish his delirious mission through music?
Thanks to NetGalley and Hachette Audio for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I was gifted an advanced audio copy of this book from NetGalley and Hachette Audio.
I really enjoyed this book. This book reminded me of Daisy Jones & the Six, but without the celebrity cast. If you enjoyed the style of Daisy Jones & the Six, but want something a little more punk, with a touch of the demonic/ horror, then this is for you.
This story follows Lily and her former band members as they decide to finally tell the story of their band, The Shivers, decades after they disappeared from the music industry. If you remember VH1’s: Behind the Music; it’s that kind of vibe.
This story is told in a series of interviews detailing the early days of The Shivers, including shows at hole-in-the-wall bars, where chaos always seems to erupt after they take stage.
This story is fun and chaotic, with a touch of religiosity and horror.
For maximum effect/ experience, I recommend an immersive read. Pick up the audiobook via Libby, Hoopla, Audible, or whatever your choice for audiobook is, and listen while you read. You won’t be disappointed!!

The concept was decent but the execution was lacking. It felt like listening to an ID documentary or a youtube deep dive with terrible cinematic fading between interviews. Too many narrators, I couldn't tell you who anyone is by voice except lily
