Charlotte Zolotow’s story follows a young boy’s belief of what his father would be like, if he lived with his mother. The young boy names all the different activities he and his father would do together, and his single mother allows the boy’s imagination to run wild. The young boy paints a picture of an amazing man, in this Slice of Life story, but in the end his mother lovingly brings him back to reality. She kindly reminds the boy that even if his father isn’t real, she is there to love and support him.
A Father Like That, is a cute story, but there isn’t a great literary depth. The plot is rather flat, but the students would enjoy the illustrations. The story is relatable, because it isn’t uncommon for children to imagine what activities they’ll do with their parents. Beyond an entertaining Read Aloud, the story doesn’t have a real purpose in class.
Neither the author or illustrator are members of the American American community, but both did a good job representing the characters fairly. The story could be a fair interpretation no matter the race.

A boy whose father left before he was born describes what his father would be like if he had one. Poignant, beautiful description of an ideal relationship between a father and son. Beautifully illustrated reprint of Charlotte Zolotow's 1971 story.
