I was sorely disappointed with this book. Its only real value is as a tiny colouring book for children.

Things I wish I'd known before I paid money for it:

1. The 38 short 'insights' accompanied by line-drawn illustrations are the kind of empty notions that don't mean anything coming from a piece of paper. Insights that someone else has achieved are useless, especially if you are in the depths of depression. Insights are called insights for a reason. They are little pieces of wisdom that you get from looking inside yourself and seeing things from a fresh perspective. They should be hard-won and meaningful on a personal level.

2. Most of what is in the book can be found online.

3. The author is religious, and writes for the religious press. Yes, maybe I should have done some research first, but opening a book and being confronted with "God has promised us..." makes me angry when there is no mention of it being a religious publication at any other stage.

I'm sure the process of writing it was valuable for the author. I know that the ideas (well, the ones that don't involve a deity) within it are sound and can help people overcome depression - but not just by reading them.

If you are looking for a meaningful way out of depression, don't bother. If you know someone with depression and don't know how to deal with it, this book may help you understand, but spouting its contents won't help your friend.

Harsh, but true.
