I was actually bored out of my mind reading this book other than two of the short stories. How sad is that? I was looking really forward to it. It was a struggle to get into it. I even started to read vol. 2, but gave up halfway through. I am a little upset that it wasn't more enjoyable for me. The story about Irene Adler was the most interesting by far.

When I was a kid I read a kid-friendly version of “The Hound of the Baskervilles” and loved it. When I saw this lovely hardcover collection of Holmes’ adventures at Barnes and Noble, I picked it up and then it got pushed back on my “To Read” list. Finally decided to start it this year and I couldn’t put it down. Doyle had a way of writing fascinating mysteries that weren’t too confusing to follow. Now I see why Sherlock Holmes is so famous. Excellent stories!

The first library book I got with my new library card. Was interesting to read one of the original books after seeing so many adaptations, especially the study in Scarlet and how they adapted that for bbc sherlock. Would like to read the hounds of baskerville.

Read all of this but Hound of Baskerville, but as that's a novel in itself it gets it's own entry. Loved this collection. I never got to read any Sir Arthur Conan Doyle while I was in school so what was the best way to read it besides on my own? I had started it roughly summer time last year and I just couldn't get into it all that much. I finished up the beginning novel and a few of the stories. Alas I just couldn't get into it with a forty hour work week and everything else.

I really like how basically every story could be a stand alone. You hear more about the bigger stories and never about he smaller ones. Maybe save for the story of Irene Adler and The Final Problem, which I had to jump a head and read for sanity sake after watching BBC's Sherlock.

The moods of Sherlock fluctuate so much that it's really hard to tell what exactly is going to occur in a story, that way. Unfortunately unless I just have amazing skills of deduction some of the stories can be fairly easy to tell the 'who done it' but that doesn't make the story less enjoyable. The stories are all able Sherlock's deduction skills, but also his lack of human connection and the fact his only connection in the world, besides his brother sometimes, is John Watson and even though he got married and moved out he is still Sherlock's main life line.

Watson and Holmes are brought together by a mutual acquaintance and become roommates. Watson soon realizes Holmes is quite an odd fellow who doesn’t take much interest in astronomy, philosophy or literature but is adept at chemistry and has a very keen eye which enables him to surmise a person’s past with just a glance.
As Watson is unemployed and friendless he joins Holmes in assisting Scotland Yard in solving a murder.

The story, written in two parts, first solves the murder in Part 1 and reveals the reasons for it in Part 2.

Very well written with spots of humor and descriptive prose.

So much fun! Having watched "Sherlock" with Mr. Cumberbatch and "Elementary", it was great to finally read the source, and see how Conan Doyle described his quirky, brilliant sleuth.
