After about 150-200 pages I was really into this story and found myself thinking about it when I wasn’t reading. I enjoyed the story from the beginning, but it took awhile to really hook me. I always like Bohjalian’s work- very readable books- not too heavy, but well written.

One of the main characters is detestable (spoiler: he's a cop) and the whole thing is somewhat white savior-y. Come to think of it, the ending leans on a major deus ex machina device, revealing a lack of dimension and nuance regarding female characters.

I initially had a hard time getting into this book. The end kept my attention and I loved Alfred and the Herberts.

The chapters narrated from the boy’s perspective make one painfully aware of how different the childhood of a foster child is from the idealized norm.

Wasn't what I expected and while it started out slow, it ended up being a really good book. Almost a riveting read.
You were certainly cheering for the characters to succeed and find any happiness - no matter how small. Well, most characters anyway.
It certainly made me want to read Bohjalian again - my faith in him is restored.

This is somewhere between 3.5 and 4. It took me a while to get into it, and I think it's because I didn't like any if the characters. And I think I didn't like them because Bohjalian paints such human/flawed characters - too realistic for me! But I'm glad I read it.

I liked this book, but the ending was a disappointment.

One of my favorite authors and a very nice man (I had the privilege of meeting him at a book signing several years ago), Bohjalian has the gift of bringing complex characters and plots to life. The Buffalo Soldier is no exception. He explores interesting questions of race, grief, and love.
