North and South is a story about a lady named Margaret Hale, who moves from South to North and faces reality the hardest way. It also describes the love story between her and a mill owner. To be honest, I chose to read it because I thought the book will present the life in the industrial english towns, but that didn't happen. However, it is a good book, with nice plot and many twists, especially in the end.

As interesting as the discussions of workers rights and class were,  the writing is just too long winded and incredibly dull. The only compelling parts were the dialogue between Margaret and Norton and the strikers. Everything else felt exceedingly monotonous. The love story was also very hard to believe in, how could Margaret and Norton end up together when they share very few values. Watch the BBC adaptation instead.

This is an amazing Victorian classic! I absolutely love how Gaskell weaves social commentary and romance together to form a complex and beautiful story. I learned a lot about the dynamics of workers and manufacturers during the Victorian period while reading this. I love how Gaskell includes the working class in her story and doesn’t shy away from asking tough questions about industrial life! The two main characters Margaret Hale and John Thornton are such well developed and great characters, and I loved reading about them. The love story of Margaret and John was a slow burn and it was absolutely lovely. ❤️ Will definitely read more books by Elizabeth Gaskell!
