the phantom is somehow like a black hole, really. a large body of matter that sucked in warm bodies who were unfortunate enough to get close to it. and he did get close with christine. so unbearably close to a lifetime brimming with the kind of love and acceptance he had been aching for. but with each crime, with each manifestation of his tortured self that appeared in every murdered body in the opera, he hurt her and scared her off. he mistook love, the caring kind, for obsession. nonetheless, for all his mistakes, the phantom was human, he always will be.

erik deserved a christine, but he also deserved to be a raoul.

such a well done gothic story... i'm just not obsessed.
never really cared for the musical, so i definitely preferred this much more gritty and "unromantic" original version. however, the last few chapters (other than the ending) kind of left me cold. felt more action/adventury than suspence/mystery. great concept, great rhythm, great ending, and yet somehow, disappointing. idk... overall it kinda lacked either drama or prose. a bit too technical and level headed for its subject matter. loved the directors & mame giry side plot though, probs my fav part of the story other than the phantom himself. oddly hilarious.
