This book is interesting to read because it is so totally different than our popular perception of Frankenstein. That Mary Shelley warnings to us about the moral dilemmas of science continue to be valid - if not even more so today than in her own time. However, as a story it is not too engaging, the writing is very typical of her time period. I am very glad I read it, and I may read it again, but it is not as enjoyable or easy a read as a story such as Dracula.

I read this for my AP Lit class.

I really enjoyed Frankenstein. We all know this story but it was great to know the details of everything. The writing was very flowery and had imagery in almost every sentence which at times I didn't like but I appreciated how it was constructed. The ending was tragic, as expected but I loved the lesson of never letting glory and ambition blind you from the things that truly matter in life and to be cautious of them. What I found surprising was the despite his story, Frankenstein still urged Walton's men to continue their dangerous path. It was as if he didn't learn the lesson he was trying to give to Walton? Anywho, I still sympathize with the monster despite all of his crimes because he didn't choose to be alive or choose the pain that came with life. Also, his chapters were my favorite parts of the story. This story was very enjoyable, I don't think I will ever reread it, but I am glad that I can check off this classic of my TBR pile.

Review: Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Quotes: "I considered the being whom I had cast among mankind, and endowed with the will and power to effect purposes of horror, such as the deed which he had now done, nearly in the light of my own vampire, my own spirit let loose from the grave, and forced to destroy all that was dear to me."

"Life, although it may only be an accumulation of anguish, is dear to me, and I will defend it."

"sorrow only increased with knowledge."

"How mutable are our feelings, and how strange is that clinging love we have of life even in the excess of misery!"

"It is true, we shall be monsters, cut off from all the world; but on that account, we shall be more attached to one another. Our lives will not be happy,"

Review: It's absolutely amazing that Mary Shelley wrote this at 18. While I could empathize with certain scenes and emotions and desires of both the creation and the creator. Ultimately, both of them are monstrous in their actions. Their stubbornness/selfishness leads to the misery and harm to those around them. One by trying to escape the repercussions of his actions. Avoid responsibility. the other with the pursuit of feeling as though he belongs. For someone to love.
Both go about it in the wrong way.

The lavish and beautiful writing by Mary Shelley deserves all the recognition it's received and perhaps more. It is truly a timeless masterpiece. The writing is loaded with anguish and sadness on both parts.
So keep that in mind if you read it.
I give it 4.5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks for reading 📚
