Yes, the dialect at times could get a bit annoying but otherwise I was hooked. I'm glad I decided to read the sequel next up!

What if all of Poe's short stories and poems were based on actual experiences? If he were called in as a civilian consultant in a serial killer case where N-E-_-E-_-_-O-R-_ was written on the wall in blood, what could the cipher mean?
And what if he had given a poor review to Davy Crockett's newly published memoir and the frontiersman wanted him to take it back, and then the two got involved in crimesolving (and trying to escape from bizarre situations, enraged thugs, and a serial killer) together?
Furthermore, I love well-written dialect, where the voice and accent of the characters shines through. Poe narrates the whole but hears Crockett's backwoods speech in a particular voice as well. For example:
""I would not under any circumstances disavow my opinions," I cooly replied. "I do, however, insist that you offer an explanation for this remarkable intrusion."
"Why, if you ain't figgered that out yet, I don't suppose you're as all-fired smart as your fancy speechifyin' would have folks believe."
This retort so piqued my anger that -- in spite of his superior physique... I half rose from my seat, prepared to forcibly eject the impudent stranger from my chamber.""

I thought the prose was very over the top, but I really liked the way Poe was characterized. A pretty good mystery.

I really wanted to like this book, I was SO excited to read it. But it was so slow and things were not adding up right. The story felt full of holes.
