I love the reillustrated version by Christian Robinson - the art is lovely. I was really moved by the story. Picture books about death are hard to come by, and this is just perfect for opening up a conversation.

One of the New York Times Best Illustrated Books of 2016. The illustrations capture the children's spirits as they celebrate the life of the bird more than mourn its death. I, too, was bothered by the children's willingness to pick up a dead bird, but it just goes to show how soft we have become since Margaret Wise Brown's time.

Sweet, simple story about death. I would love to be buried and remembered just the way these children bury and remember the little bird, with ferns, flowers, tears, a song and memories. Great story for anyone to be reminded that life does go on and death is not to be feared and shied away from discussing.

felt like it could use some better editing, there were just a few random extra lines that just didn't work for me. otherwise I think the Christian Robinson illustrations made it work

This is a strange little picture book, but not necessarily in a bad way. I adore Christian Robinson's illustrations and despite the somewhat heavy topic that this book skims the surface of, his sweet and innocent style helps demonstrate children's innocent wonder and curiosity, even in death.

This is a strange book— it’s morbid and honest and kind of funny. Not sure that it’s one I’d recommend highly except for the novelty of the thing.
