The Lights on Knockbridge Lane by Roan Parrish

THE LIGHTS ON KNOCKBRIDGE LANE was a very cute Christmas romance about two neighbors falling in love and finding family. Adam has recently moved back to Garnet Run with his adopted daughter Gus and he soon finds himself entangled with the strange, reptile and spider loving, Wes.

I liked both of these guys and especially enjoyed Adam's relationship with his daughter. He never stifles her inquisitiveness and curiosity and he constantly ensures that she knows she's loved no matter what. Kids in romance books can be hit or miss but Parrish has written Gus's character really well. There was a lot of sweetness and tenderness in this book, whether it's between family, friends, or lovers. I enjoyed seeing some of the series' previous couples and I hope there will be more books to come.

Content Warning: Wes experiences pretty severe anxiety over the idea of being noticed or the center of attention

Not my fave Roan Parrish novel but it was a soft, sweet holiday romance set in the kind of small town Parrish writes so well. The child in this book is the usual wise beyond her years precocious that always annoys me, but I did enjoy the rest of the characters including tender-hearted Adam and the reclusive, sexy Wes.

This is part of a series but works well as a standalone nevertheless.

I related to the characters so much in this story. I found myself laughing and crying throughout and I didn't want to put the book down. Quite an enjoyable read.

A lovely Hallmark vibe MM Christmas Story.

Audio (Michael Dean)

Summary:  Single father returns home to small town Wyoming where he finds an unexpected connexion to his reclusive and unusual neighbour.

Stats: CR, M/M, open door, part of a series but stands alone.

Notes: Started off very well, but the final conflict felt a bit lacking - I’m noticing this particular conflict/resolution now with both Parrish books I’ve read - If that pattern continues, I don’t think the well created characters will be enough to pull me through.

OTT and Spoilery Content Notes:
Single parent MC, child, insomnia, divorce, neurodivergent MMC, snakes, spiders, kinship care/adoption (of MC’s child), casually queer/gender nonbinary side characters, short/small MMC, coparenting conflicts, power play, family tension, family estrangement, childhood celebrity (unwanted), line/condom/sex toy use, anal play, anal sex, prostate massage, very light power play, anxiety, third act breakup

Warm and wonderful

It’s never too early to get into the Christmas spirit, right? I was soooo excited for the first gay Harlequin, and I already know I love Roan’s writing, so this was an easy decision to get. I enjoyed it from start to finish, and I was happy the conflict didn’t last too long. I hope we see lots more of Garnet Run!

”It's not the most lights ever," she said. "I looked it up. There's a family called the Gay family. Like you, Daddy. Anyway, they have way more, but theirs is a whole huge thing. But it's pretty good!"

man i so expected to hate this. working in a thrift store i see SO MANY books donated by this publisher, a good portion cop romances, so when i saw a queer christmas rom com i completely expected it to be outrageous and probably a bit ignorant; so in light of a boring work day i decided to read the first few chapters only to be hours later hiding in a corner still reading.
i am so surprised because of how much i enjoyed this? it was funny and sweet and cheesy in that hallmark way that is such a guilty pleasure but i consume like a romance starved maniac every November/December.

I don't really have much to say about this. It was very light, very fluffy, very Hallmark Christmas movie with LGBTQIA+ family. I would have liked a some steamy scenes, but this was a nice, fun read and am intrigued to read more from this author (am thinking [b:The Rivals of Casper Road|60495546|The Rivals of Casper Road (Garnet Run, #4)|Roan Parrish|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1657749388l/60495546._SY75_.jpg|95339812] - thoughts?)

Oh, there are one of two triggers: anxiety and family estrangement (which might be upsetting/triggering for some of you, especially around this Christmas/New Year holidays).

Um. This was…. Harlequin. So exactly like the traditional heteronormative books but with a queer couple, and the obligatory Christmas miracle + a pet-like adorable child.

I don’t know. I guess it’s a “it’s me, not you” situation? I didn’t see the burgeoning romance at all.

I’ve come to expect leaps of growth from Parrish’s characters and this one was like “The weird guy and the sensitive guy met and fell in love because the kid wished for a Christmas miracle.”
