4.5 A really inventive world, such a great idea. Dynamic enough, told from different perspectives. Half a star less for some too fast and easy solutions to the plot, but generally, an excellent book.

I read this on my daughters suggestion and I really enjoyed it! The author is a really good writer and it was a great, fast plot line. I love the roach story and it’s metaphors for otherness and tolerance. Really well done.

This story was clearly meant for much younger readers than I. That did work against it in the beginning, for me at least and I more than once considered giving up and moving on to another book. I soldiered on and was rewarded with a relatively more interesting story, but it never got to the point where I could recommend it. The sheer amount of coincidences in the story were outrageous. It made me feel that the size of the world was only big enough to handle all the important characters and no more. It was by no means terrible, but it really felt like a children’s story with some possibility but kept simple at every turn.

4 out of 5 stars!!!!

This was a wonderfully sweet and surprisingly dark story! Super weird, extremely well-fleshed out world, memorable characters, truly great stuff! Maximillian Fly is my Best Friend

First, the bad. This book has a lot, A LOT, of inconsistencies. Various points were the books references things that never happened like they took place in the beginning of the book. There was also a few plot twists too many, where it got to the point that it felt like the stakes weren't real.

Now, the good: I absolutely 120% ADORE this book. I could not physically love the characters more (I would protect Maximillian with my life), the plot was interesting and the writing style was just so full of wonder, I actually had to underline some sections. This book is just so utterly beautiful, everyone should read it.

Also, this book has made me feel guilty about killing cockroaches. Every time I see one, his voice floats into my head: 'You do not like my carapace and my broad, flat head, and I can tell even my beautiful indigo iridescent wings do not persuade you of my goodness...I know very well that if I were small enough you would stamp on me without a moments thought.' And I feel. So. Guilty!

CW: Death, domestic abuse (mainly emotional), discrimination, oppressive government.
