A strange and surreal little book. I enjoyed the unsettling vibe and the way the story was split up into three sections. The themes of food and children were really interesting in how they appeared across the three parts, and definitely left me thinking about possible meanings and intentions.

Not really sure what I just read but I know I enjoyed it and was sad that it was over in just 70 pages.

Oyamada has a compelling, surreal style of writing that depicts the friendship of two men and their wives, of three meals and the conversations they were embedded in.

An odd little book.

🧠 My thoughts
I’ve read another book by this author “The Factory”, this book was pretty deep like the other one but sadly more boring for me.
I understood the author’s intention to illustrate the inequality between men and women, and how men are usually more passive compared to women when it comes to pregnancy and having children
. However, it was very hard to understand the point without re-reading some paragraphs again and again.

This book could be compared to “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” and “Convenience Store Woman” which are all packed with deep and meaningful metaphors throughout the books. Although “Convenience Store Woman” left me thinking about it for quite some time and “Kim Jiyoung, Born 1982” made me cry my eyes out, this book didn’t have slightest the same effect on me. The metaphors didn’t work and I couldn’t help feeling quite bored while reading.

The ending didn’t quite leave any impact either.

👍 What I like
  • Meaningful and deep metaphors

👎 What I don't like
  • The metaphors don’t leave any impact on my feelings
  • Quite boring to read
