Does a good job of playing in the space of tropes and keeps you on your toes. Nothing that happens hasn't been done before, but the story doesn't broadcast which twist will come, and the overall effect is of a deliberately disorienting mystery, as befits the speculative premise. The characters are prickly, volatile, and often unwise, which is to say frustratingly human at times.
