I grew to love Kya too much. Her simple way of living and creating happiness was heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time. Such a touching story. Adored this book.

This took me a little while to get in to, probably just because I had seen so many amazing reviews of it which is hard for a book to live up to, but once I did enjoyed it.

I liked the middle third the best — essentially the parts where it’s just descriptions of the marsh and the birds and insects. When it was focused more on story it didn’t feel as strong. I thought the last third felt quite a different book. I was thinking it could have been shorter but maybe not on reflection.

Beautiful nature writing and I liked the different characters. I also really liked the poetry in it — sometimes it can be a bit cringeworthy to include poems a character had written but they worked well here.

This book brought me back to my love of reading! I love the story mostly because of the setting, which is fascinating to a girl from California. I kept wanting and waiting for good things to come to the main protagonist. I was grateful for the moments when it did.

This book shook me to the core. I loved it being set in North Carolina swamps, makes me happy to read about a location I grew up in. Kya was such a great, interesting and easy to love character. I found myself routing for her and no one else at all times.

This is between a 3.5 and a 4 for me. The murder mystery didn't even become a thing until more than halfway through the book and I didn't find it all the intriguing since there were literally no other suspects. The reveal at the end wasn't very surprising but it seemed improbable I'm interested to check out the movie it feels like it'd work better in a visual medium.
