I think the story was fine, and the thriller components were interesting my problems more like with the structure that kind of overall bring the rating down. That being said I did like it more than I thought I would. I think I would read more thrillers written by the author if it was not so strong on the American military propaganda type beat.

First off, I know the author served in the Army, so the character may be parroting what military people think, but I don't like reading about how people from Cuba or Pakistan or Afghanistan are all fucked up. Like the American Military is messing those places up too it was not always like that. Like come on, and the character complaining that Cubans are relying propaganda that their military pushes while then also doing the exact same thing about how America is the best and Pakistan and Afghanistan suck, like it's so annoying to read, I would think its a commentary but the character doesn't learn or grow so I don't think it is.

Second I think it's really dumb that the female character meets the male character and says she has a bf and then like 3 chapters later she immediately cheats on him with no "romance" from the main character. How lazy is that, like their "love" doesn't even serve a purpose to the plot and the ending could've been achieved regardless.

Third, is a spoiler
I don't really know why they spent the whole book building up to this 30 million dollar prize just for the characters to get their plans changed and they are like ok whatever and move on, like maybe that's realistic in the situation, but It kinda felt like the author was going for a whole heait James Bond thing and then just doesn't. It seems weird, the character complains like once and then moves on.

Really 3.5 but I like the variety of stories that Demille writes so I rounded up. My frustration with this one is the repetition of the thoughts/conversation centered around the right or wrong decision and if death were the outcome piece. This seemed to cause the story to drag a bit. It also felt as if it were filler to add more pages to the book. The final chase scene was not believable and the the way it was transitioned to the final chapter seemed to mean that DeMille couldn't make it work either. All told, this was a good little adventure story that was a few hours of fun escape

As always, Nelson DeMille never disappoints! I always love his character development and the visual and sensual context he provides in his stories.

I enjoyed the main character in this book, he was multidimensional and quite developed. The Cuban character in the book however, were pretty one-dimensional and simplistic. Perhaps because it was told from the point of view of the main character who came with his biases, but it could also be a shortcoming of the author.

The storyline was interesting, but not overly compelling. I felt as if there were lots of teasers that hinted at a potential great adventure, but the adventure never quite panned out. And the ending felt lackluster. However, it was a fun trip to go on and I would recommend it for a light read. Don't expect any deep philosophical thinking here.

3.5 Stars. Love the Cuban and Key West atmosphere. Both felt real. The overall story was exactly what you expect it to be. Nothing too taxing, and overall a fun romp.

I never DNF a book but I did for this one. The summary promised hidden treasure and adventure and all I read was boring and the characters talking about what the plan was going to be. I even skipped ahead to see if it got any better and from what I saw it didn’t.

I went ahead and finished. But I did not enjoy this book.
I did not like the main character. The action was always down the road and never happened.
The main character was a bit too "machismo" for me. Just frustrating.

I would give it 2.5 stars. The characters didn’t feel fully fleshed out, but it was entertaining enough
