*pointing accusingly* Christ figure

The New York Review of Books accolade printed on the back of (my edition of) this book reads “This investigation of an ancient murder (side note: “ancient” seems a bit of a stretch, but when it comes to something as ephemeral as memory perhaps it is) takes on the quality of a hallucinatory exploration, a deep, groping search into the gathering darkness of human intentions for a truth that continually slithers away.” The character of Santiago Nasar is painted and repainted each page of this book, the very community recasting him as rake and innocent in turn, but forever as a dead man. So many coincidences gone awry, Santiago’s innocence denied at the beginning and affirmed by the end. Christ figure! Stigmata! Very good and thoughtful! Speaks to the paranoia and guilt of any community!
