This book was quite enjoyable. I started knowing mixed reviews about the book and I expected worse than what I read, so it was a good surprise.
There was no big/surprising plot twist (despite it being a murder story), and this book pushed for an enemy-to-lover relationship that wasn’t really meant to be. Hence the first interactions between our two MCs are wonky, a bit unbelievable. Also dialogs are sorta cringey.
More criticism for those that have read it:
I was very confused by multiple things:
1) the « connected » relationship between Signa and Blythe. To be honest I thought the book was a surprise sapphic at some point !! Their connexion and chemistry felt more real and deep than Death and Signa…
2) the first interactions between Death and Signa really felt like a forced enemy to lovers. Signa’s anger towards Death didn’t feel real, more « added » to the story. I understand her points but it was not shown well. Or Signa was immature but it didn’t show this.
3) Death felt like a devil in disguise. I know he’s the love interest but with so many references to « good girl », « good etiquette », and then opposing it to Death’s appeal - he felt like the devil of the story. The character meaning to attract Signa towards « evil »/untoward behavior. I wondered a few time if his character would turn out to be the villain, the seducer. I’m still wondering actually.

the concept of this book is super cool. unfortunately, there's a lot of writing errors in this book. for example, it's in the third person, but there would be constant points where it would randomly bring up something that the main character, signa, should definitely not know about given the fact it's from her point of view. there's no strong plot even by chapter twelve, and while i'm perfectly content with plots being nonexistent in books, this one had painful pacing.
Death is also characterized as a smug man which i found to be such a waste given how it started off with the book having a fairytale-esque storytelling with cryptic messages. the protagonist, signa, also had no strong character traits and constantly shifted between "i must be ladylike and i wish i had a friend" to being annoyed or stubborn. it just didn't make sense. the writing style is also choppy. i just feel overall this book could've used a lot more editing.

This book was so good. The mystery had me guessing the entire time. I loved this cast of characters. I was sucked in front the start. I will definitely be starting Foxglove immediately.
