My dad used to read this to me in bed when I was a kid, and I loved it then, and I love it now. It's representation of Māori culture and the significance of nature, and spirit connections and just, well, everything, is expressed so beautifully, it's almost enough to make you cry. And writing this is making me want to re-read (again).
