If there is any one thing in this world to preclude all / kindness, / It is the need for it, — it is this sad, self-defeating / dependence.

She that should love him must look for small love in return, / — like the ivy / On the stone wall.

Shall we come out of it all, some day, as one does from a / tunnel? / Will it be all at once, without our doing or asking, / We shall behold clear day, the trees and meadows about us, / And the faces of friends, and the eyes we loved looking at / us? / Who knows? Who can say it? It will not do to suppose it.

It took some time to fully allow myself to be enveloped by this novel. Soon I just let the words carry me, and Clough's symphonic style was truly breathtaking, and painstakingly honest. Although I was a little deterred by the story, I think the epistolary style added to the quiet heartbreak of Claude. Seeing him progress (albeit through snippets) as an idealistic, pretentious intellectual to a man in the midst of death (in war, in love, and in thought) felt very natural in a novel only 83 pages long.

It was only interesting to me after I had had class on this text and I could analyse what he was saying instead of just guessing and being lost. So I guess 2 stars?

Surprisingly good story and writing style! Definitely a bit of a hidden gem, but completely worth the 99 cents I payed to get it on kindle! I recommend it.
