This was a difficult read. Strongly written in many ways. I do slightly feel biased against it because of Barbara’s characterization as the black woman. It teetered on tropes. A sexual, angry, and existing to prop up or save her non-black counterpart.

Kristin Hannah does it again!

An emotional story that also embodied the distrust, manipulation and angst during the the Vietnam War time period.

The only negative comment I have is that I wish the romantic relationships in the story were developed more so that I was more emotionally invested. However, I understand that this is probably a reflection of the books context where some relationships were built from trauma bonding.

This was a great book. I really appreciated how Hannah showed both the war, and how Frankie grew disenchanted with the military/aware of the lies being told during her time there, and the effects of being in an active war zone on Frankie after she came home. Along the way I rooted for Frankie and her happiness, as well as Barbara and Esther’s.
I loved seeing the bond they created and how they continually showed up for each other through good times and bad.
It was interesting how people kept insisting there were no women from the USA in Vietnam; I wonder if that was government propaganda to keep more protests from happening. Such an unnecessary war, such an unnecessary loss of innocent lives.
I loved seeing Frankie deal with PTSD, as difficult as it was at times. The ranch truly feels like it is what she was meant to do. The ending made me gasp, even though I had a feeling
that Jamie never died.

Overall a great, sweeping story.

This story was fascinating.  I learned information about the Vietnam war and the women who served that I did not know.

This was a very good book. It definitely gave me more insight on what a  military vet goes through, even now. It somehow encouraged me in my pursuit of nursing.

This book tells such an important history of the women of the Vietnam War. I love all of Kristin Hannah’s books but this is by far my new favorite!

I'm...l'm...speechless. What an incredible novel. Kristin Hannah is a word smith like no other. She has a way of bringing you into the story and taking you captive with every word written. I'm going to be processing this book for weeks to come. Wow. Wow. Wow. So so good!
