I read this book so quickly, it was very hard to put down, very emotional, very informative, and very worth a read.

All in all, a pretty incredible read. I learned, I loved, my heart broke, I found myself, and so much more. At parts hard to read, a bit predictable, esp toward the end. Please check content warnings before you read.

When I first started reading, I was worried that the hype about this book might be too much.  I'm pleased to say that I loved it.  It was fascinating, and I learned a lot about nursing in Vietnam.  Kristin Hannah's ability to make you feel like you are reliving that period is masterful.  She weaves details of music, clothing, cars, food, etc. to transport you back in time.  I hadn't realized the author was the same age as me.  Unsurprisingly, she knows how to set the stage for a book in the 1960s and 1970s.

This is a difficult book to rate; it's so hard to read. Explicit and dark, but also something that should be told and read. Triggers abound! The plot is a rollercoaster; so much up and a LOT of down. I wished there was a little more good or humor to help you along, but it's a tough subject. I learned a lot. I'd definitely recommend it, if you can get through it.

*ADDITION*
The longer I thought about this book, the less I liked it. I've never gone back and changed a rating, but I am now. The romances, yes plural, bugged me. But honestly at the end of the day I think it was the thin, disingenuous characters that threw this whole thing off for me. It was almost a good book, but there are some major flaws here. The author is good at smoke and mirrors though, so it takes a minute to see all the gaping holes.

"The Women" by Kristen Hannah delves into the complex journey of Frankie McGrath, a recent nursing school graduate who finds herself thrust into the chaos of the Vietnam War as a surgical nurse. Despite her parents' objections, Frankie's determination to serve leads her to join the Army, only to face the harsh realities of war and the toll it takes on her psyche.

Hannah skillfully portrays Frankie's struggles with PTSD and alcoholism, offering a poignant exploration of the challenges faced by veterans returning from combat zones. Through Frankie's experiences, the novel highlights the often overlooked sacrifices and emotional turmoil endured by those who serve their country.

The character of Frankie McGrath is compelling and deeply human. Readers are drawn into her world, rooting for her as she navigates the difficult path toward healing and acceptance.

I love that Kristin Hannah gives me lessons on history I theoretically know.
Honestly, I don't know much about Vietnam besides the headlines. This was a really beautiful look at the impact on a generation through the lense of one woman's life, and her dear friends.
This made me immensely thankful for my own bookending friends.
