I was rather excited about this book because I've been looking for a series just like this one. Unfortunately, in the 3rd chapter, I encountered a slur that is used against the Romany people and decided to quit reading. I understand that at the time this novel was set that would have been a common way to refer to the Romany but this book was published in 2018. That's recent enough that if the author wasn't aware of it being a slur, someone involved in the editing and publishing process should have.

I really like novels about spunky Victorian ladies who solve mysteries, almost as much as I enjoy cozy mysteries. I was strongly reminded of [b:A Curious Beginning|28186322|A Curious Beginning (Veronica Speedwell, #1)|Deanna Raybourn|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1459724348l/28186322._SX50_.jpg|42706684] by [a:Deanna Raybourn|156327|Deanna Raybourn|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1601395383p2/156327.jpg]. A series I adore.

This is the first book in what is sure to be my new "go-to" series for the upcoming 2021 Lite and Fluffy Summer Reading season. Plus it makes me want to finish reading the Veronica Speedwell series mentioned above.

Lots of fun, with a great narrator in the audio edition, and a lovely slow burn romance. Will look forward to the second one!
