A four only because I love Jay’s character development. Was way longer than it needed to be then did a rush wrap up

I love Attica Locke’s writing, and am willing to overlook the liberties she takes when detailing a legal process just because I am so engrossed in the story. She does a great job of leaving no loose ends with a myriad of storylines and they all come together in a delightful web at the end that just had me brimming with joy at the art of her storytelling. Some of her characters and scenarios are too contrived to just ignore, which is why the 3 stars, but I’m going to read everything she’s written because I am hooked on her style all together.

I skipped several chapters towards the end just to be done with this book! It takes a long time to go nowhere!! The tense is not my favorite and it was just slow and so difficult to get through.

Ooh, this was so good! So layered and engrossing. She’s become a must-read author for me.

The second book in the Jay Porter series picks up more than a decade after the events that occurred in [b:Black Water Rising|7059096|Black Water Rising|Attica Locke|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1273621095s/7059096.jpg|6394686]. While he remains an attorney in Houston, there have been major, unexpected changes in Jay's personal life that gave this story a different feel from the first book. I had to re-read a certain passage that revealed the biggest change because I was so surprised by it. By setting the book in the 1990s and introducing those changes, the two novels could easily be read as stand-alones and wouldn't necessarily need to be read in order. I loved the legal thriller and political intrigue aspects of the story, and felt like the characters were fully formed individuals who I wanted to spend time with. Locke's writing is thoroughly engaging and has drawn me into each book I've read by her so far. After reading [b:Bluebird, Bluebird|34219838|Bluebird, Bluebird|Attica Locke|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1494608126s/34219838.jpg|55271375], I added all of Locke's backlist to my TBR list and have thoroughly enjoyed making my way through the catalogue. I have just one book left to complete ([b:The Cutting Season|34455751|The Cutting Season|Attica Locke|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1488558291s/34455751.jpg|19227531]). Once I finish it, I know that I'll be eagerly awaiting a new book from her, which can't arrive fast enough.

I used this for the 2018 PopSugar Ultimate Reading Challenge prompt "the next book in a series you started."
