Yeah, the word masterpiece is overused a lot, but I think this one qualifies.
I could spend this entire review jabbering on about how it's a heartbreaking, sometimes bleak often hilarious paen to love against all odds, or how it genuinely gives me hope for this messed up world of ours that this kind of art is being created.
But instead, I'll just say, read it.
Read it and laugh huge chuckles of the "what the f#ck was that?" variety. Read it and weep uncontrollably at the various harrowing realities laid bare. Read it and see more filthy, anarchic, bloody, raw, wonderful content than you thought could exist in a comic book.
(Note: if you're under 18 and/or of a sensitive disposition i would advise you to ignore this advice. See content warnings)
Thanks, Fiona Staples and Brian K. Vaughan, you cooked good.

The love I have for this book is unmatched. The mix of humor and reflection are perfect. I have never enjoyed a piece of media so otherworldly and absolutely WILD -- readers that are sensitive to graphic content please proceed with caution!

The only reason I didn’t rate this comic higher is because it has unnecessary slurs (when is it necessary ever). I think cursing and using other words would be fine where some slurs are used. Otherwise it’s visually stunning, campy at times which I like and very graphically violent. As someone who doesn’t do horror though it’s nothing so graphic that’s scary just lots of action/fighting type gore.

It won’t take you long to see why this hilarious, war-torn, heart-shattering, sexually graphic, peace-exalting, violent science fantasy space opera starring star-crossed interspecies lovers, their adorable baby, a robot prince, a hitman with a hairless cat, and many other lovable and villainous aliens has been censored, challenged, banned…and won twelve Eisner Awards, seventeen Harvey Awards, and a Hugo. It’s a masterpiece.

I started off just kind of being meh about this series. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't obsessed. This is definitely a series that grows on you the more you read it. I've come to love and care about characters I used to hate, and I can't usually say that for a comic series.

Saga is a fantasy space opera comic series that is currently halfway through its overall story arc. Saga follows a young couple, Alanna and Marko, as they flee from the governments of their respective home worlds that have been at war for decades. Alanna and Marko have committed the ultimate crime: falling in love and having a baby. All they want is to raise their daughter peacefully, but the rest of the universe wants them dead. Along the way, they encounter ghosts, bounty hunters, vengeful lovers, disgraced princes, reclusive authors, and more.
I cannot express how much I love Saga, and I am eagerly awaiting the day that the authors announce when the next issues will start being published. From Fiona Staple’s gorgeous artwork to the complex characters to the gripping plot, this series has everything. Above all, it is a rumination on just how far reaching the effects of war are. No one is spared from its horrors, and often, the most innocent are the ones who lose the most. At the same time, though, Saga is about finding love and a will to live even amongst all the horrors in the universe. It is a beautiful and heartbreaking tale.
