I wouldn't call this [a: Edna Ferber|86241|Edna Ferber|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1367347524p2/86241.jpg]'s best work ([b:So Big|257443|So Big|Edna Ferber|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1392451491l/257443._SY75_.jpg|249505] has that distinction) but I won't deny that this book is a lot of fun.

What I like about Ferber's work is that her books feel so alive . Her characters are filled with all sorts of interesting people doing interesting things. I also really appreciate her female leads. They're always a lot of fun, feel believable to their time period, yet feel so modern and vibrant. This book is no exception.

While at times a bit too melodramatic for my preference, I did enjoy my time with Clio Dulaine and Clint Maroon (talk about a romance).

Now I'm off to watch the movie adaption.

I really liked the book, for its uniqueness, humor and the short-tempered Clio, tough I think he realizes from the very beginning he cares for her.

I didn't realize this one was written in the 40s, and I think it's possible that I don't love the older writing style. It felt... like it treated race weirdly? Which isn't exactly incompatible with the time. Just not for me. Might see the movie though.

Ugh. Racist imagery and language that added nothing to an otherwise good story.

Maybe if edna ferber could describe a black man as anything other than like a “monkey” the rating would be higher.
