Okay, four stars might be too much. But I think the second half of this novel really came up for me. I believe that Rue’s internal struggles with being a leader are so real. Because many of us can have confidence, but we never feel like that we can be a leader, especially of a lot of people, so I really enjoyed that aspect as I could relate. This novel also seems to me as if it was supposed to be split into two but the publishers were like no we’re just gonna do a duology. Because the last part of this was jampacked with a lot of information, the same as with the blood trials, but this one came up for me more than the first book and I loved Rues exploration and Julius slayed the second half. I love how down to earth this book feel.

It really does read YA but like younger seeing as how the resolution was easy and quick. Good read tho

After reading Wings of Ebony, I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Ashes of Gold. I was pleasantly surprised. The character development was stronger, the storyline was more clear, and the writing was better. Love or hate Rue,  Elle found a way to keep true to Rue’s essence while having her develop into something greater. The reveals were well done and the epilogue was a nice way to wrap up the story.

Really enjoyed this second installment in the world of Rue from J Elle! She’s one of my fave black YA authors, and I’m rooting for everybody black! As a black woman, I see so much of my teenage self in Rue and her journey for self discovery. Would recommended to anyone with teen girls in their life, especially melanated ones!

5 Stars

EDIT:This is a solid 5. I reviewed over my highlights and J. Elle really did a beautiful job with this book. Excellent steady character development and solid magical system. Bri, Julius, and Zora were down for the cause! The relationship that they had with Rue was also a great part of the book. I still stand by that the love triangle was NOT really needed but I understand that I needed to be there as a plot device to drive the conflict. But Again 5 solid stars!!! One of the best YA fantasy books I read this year!!!

4.5 rounded to 5.

Loved this book. Big improvement with character development, pacing, magical system and clan organization from the first book. B side romance was not needed but still good. Rue is wonderful in this book and a great leader. Well done. #BlackGirlMagic.

I enjoyed this sequel, but it felt different from the first book, and I don't really know if that is a good or bad thing yet. Loved the pacing. The characters were great.

~ Amazing Sequel! ~

I don’t even know where to start with this one! It was so incredible! J. Elle did an amazing job with this and I loved it so much!!

Rue grew so much over the course of this book and I loved following along with her emotional journey! All the characters were super well developed and I loved all the new ones introduced!

The plot was good and kept me reading, it gave me huge mockingjay vibes when Rue and co. were constantly sneaking about the Central District!

Overall, you could tell J. Elle really poured her heart and soul into this and put in the time and effort to make this a satisfying conclusion to the series! This series is so needed and so important to a lot of people and it really showed in the writing and in the nuance of emotion!! J. Elle knocked it out of the park and I cannot wait to read whatever she writes next! Do yourself a favor and go pick this duology up!!

CWs - fantasy violence, frequent strong language

I loved the conclusion and the message behind this book, but I got a little tired of... Other than that, I really enjoyed the book, and I still love J. Elle's writing!
the constant fear of betrayal... and then actual betrayal happening over and over again. Once or twice is shocking, everything after that feels a little tired.
