I loved this show. It was so heavily advertised I remember my sister and I being given bedtime dispensations, I apologize if I made any of you feel old then, bedtime sheesh, but we were allowed to stay up 'til 9pm solely so we could finish the first episode.

'Earth 2', if you don't remember, was set 200 or so years in the future, where the earth is mostly wasteland, good only for mining and some depressing tourism, with most people living in space stations. A mysterious condition has started attacking more and more children, called The Syndrome. No child who has it lives past the age of 9. Believing a new world and healthy ecosystem would provide a cure (somehow), a rich woman has gathered together a group to colonize a distant planet. Something goes wrong and the small advance group of colonists are stranded thousands of miles away from their intended site with limited supplies and an awareness that the planet may not be as uninhabited as they'd been led to believe. There were aliens, great scenic shots, intrigue among the survivors and a guest-spot by Tim Curry.

So when I found 'Puzzle' (book 2) at the recycling center a couple years ago I lwas excited to read the books to the show I'd loved so much, so set out to find the others. It took some time. This was a big leap of faith considering how disappointing the 'seaQuest DSV' book was. I mean, are TV tie-ins ever worth the time?

This one is, if, like me, you were a big fan of the show and and don't mind the occasional eye-roll. No offense Ms. Crandall, since I know you were tied down by the teleplay, but there was some hammy stuff in here. But that doesn't mean that the book wasn't a lot of fun. It succeeded in carrying out the action of the show and reviving the characters for me without it feeling like the author was just tapping out what the characters were doing on screen.

It was a great sci-fi show and it was too bad it ended the way it did with a cliffhanger. I've looked to see if they put any kind of story-line projections for the planned second season in the DVD box set, but it doesn't look like it. Creators, give the fans some closure, huh? This book is a good introduction, taking about as long to read as it would to watch the two-hour pilot.

Earth 2

Next: 'Leather Wings' (published third, but internal chronology makes this a better follow-up to the first novel)

Earth 2 was a short lived series - in part because on the East coast it usually got pre-empted by basketball games and, in part, because certain idiots wanted to change the series, in particular what made it cool.

What made Earth 2 stand out, even today, was the fact that the leader was a woman, and she wasn't stupid. The doctor was a woman. The only woman who seemed to be simply a wife, wasn't simply a wife. That was cool.

This novelization is different, slightly, then the series, but a good read.
