Another piece of excellent history, forensics, and journalism from Charles Pellegrino. This is a lengthy essay focusing on a single topic - where exactly was the ship Californian on the night the Titanic sank, and how do we know it. But it branches out, as is always the case with Pellegrino, and has a lot to say about just how many reasons people have to obscure the truth to themselves and others, and also about the unrecognized importance in accounts by people not generally deemed star players in the tale of an epic moment. As with each of Pellegrino's books about the Titanic, I come away not just knowing more but having some fresh insights into the process of knowing.
