I loved this graphic memoir that broke down all the ways the author was mean and manipulative of her younger brother. I’ve never read a book that was this honest about having the upper hand in this sibling dynamic. Lots to relate to here, either as the younger sibling going through it or the oldest sibling doing it.

Needed to break up my sadness books (pandemics! Cannibalism! Starvation! Abandonment!....I picked some winners here) with a bit of light graphic novel fun.
I liked the illustrations and I’m always a fan of a memoir. I felt that Harper was way too hard on herself. She was a kid, she made mistakes, she should not have been responsible for her brother so much. I don’t know why her parents continued to assign her that responsibility and then get mad at her. I guess this was over many years but still.....
I hope that Harper has been able to overcome these feelings and forgive herself. Maybe this graphic novel is her way of doing that.

Hmm "Bad Sister" was just okay. It definitely was written with a guilty adult perspective. It focused on so many negative feelings but not how the author/main character learned to be a better person and forgive herself. That missing (or perhaps under-emphasized) piece made me wonder what children would think of it.

This graphic memoir will be great for fans of Raina Telgemeir's "Sisters". About an older sister who struggles to be compassionate toward her younger brother and often falls short, eventually seeing herself as just "bad". I think children will really relate to Charise's struggles. I was a little frustrated with how the parents dealt with Charise. It seemed like they were more focused on shaming her, rather than helping her change her behavior. Charise also references having face blindness at one point and then it's never addressed again.
