That was the difference between a hero and a villain, a soldier and a murderer, a victory and a crime. Which side of a river you called home.

The First Law trilogy has brilliant characters and writing, and a plot that is meandering but ultimately entertaining. Best Served Cold still has the brilliant characters and writing, but also a fast-paced, action-packed story that sucked me under right away and kept me hooked for the duration. I was invested in Monza's story and the cast of misfits she surrounded herself with. Every cameo by a First Law character was a new moment of delight. Nicomo Cosca is definitely one of the shining stars of this book, followed closely by Friendly, a murdering thug with OCD. I loved what the author did with his character.

We start off the story with certain facts: Duke Orso has betrayed Monza and her brother. It is undeserved and unjustified. Monza demands revenge. And yet, over the course of the story, we also discover that things aren't that straightforward. This book isn't as political as the first trilogy, focusing much more on the personal relationships between people and how those may or may not influence entire nations. There are definitely a couple of moments that could have come straight out of A Game of Thrones, and more than a few twists that I did not see coming, but that make me very eager to find out what else will happen in this world.

Because of the straightforward plot and the excellent pacing, this is my favourite First Law book so far. If there is one thing this world has taught me, it's that characters rarely get what they deserve. So while I may have wanted a different ending, it is a Ninefingers would say: you have to be realistic about these things.
