Ugh, wonderful. Hilarious, bloody, inspiring... watching characters overcome crippling adversity to return as immediately as possible to the problematic behaviour that set their adversity in action to begin with? *chef kiss* Just about the perfect book for me, no notes.

Abercrombie has once again demonstrated his mastery of the fantasy genre. This standalone novel is a dark and gritty revenge tale that will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. The characters are brilliant, and their 'development' throughout the story is absolutely captivating.

Monza Murcatto is one badass protagonist! Her journey of vengeance is filled with ruthless determination, and I couldn't help but root for her, even with her lack of heroic qualities. The supporting cast is equally impressive, each with their unique quirks and motives that add layers of intrigue. I especially enjoyed Shivers perspective. Also I wasn't that intrigued by Cosca in the original first law series but I really enjoyed seeing more of him in this story.

The only reason I'm not giving this a full 5 stars is that, at times, the pacing felt a bit sluggish, and some sections were a tad long-winded. But, honestly, this is a minor gripe in an otherwise fantastic book. I also was going to give this a 5 star review but then I read The Heroes which I thought was even better and therefore could not justify giving this 5 stars anymore.

Highly recommend!

DNF. I tried liking this one, but I really could not get into it. I don’t like any of these characters, can’t root for them. Interest is fine, and can be enough at times, but not in this case. Sorry Joe

Sorry, but Monza was as much a monster as people she sought out to destroy. And much more disgusting.
I wished her death as much as the rest of them. She was not only as bad as them but she refused to really acknowledge her hypocrisy. Also, her sister-fucking brother very much deserved to die. Good fucking riddance. Monza was like a sullen teenager for most of the book. And she along with Cosca are like cockroaches in more ways than one. Honestly Monza reminds me quite a bit of Bayaz. Hated that bastard, hate her as well. Her happy ending is like a slap in the face.
And in spite of what Cosca claimed, she didn't seem to give a fuck about other people. Her stupidity was the reason behind Shivers losing his eye and all she could do was be disgusted at him and jump the first cock she found that wasn't his. Not that I think Shivers was any better. Foscar's murder was awful.
If Monza died it could've been 4,5*
