Recommended 5star read by author Sophie Hannah (which I bought for the UK BBC/itv4 2x2 parters Point of rescue / The other half lives). Hopefully it lives up to the rating.

It took a little while to get into the authors writing style but once I did it was a quick read. I got frustrated with the main character multiple times for acting rashly. Also, I figured out who kidnapped/killed the girls pretty early on. Not the most thrilling but pretty entertaining. I'll most likely read the 2nd novel in the series.

I picked this up to meet the criteria for 2 book challenges that when mashed together we basically: read a mystery by an LGBTQ author or about an LGBTQ character.

The Last Place You Look is Kristen Lepionka's debut novel. In this literary crime novel, the central character is Roxane Weary, a private investigator who is approached by a woman who wants her to exonerate her brother for the murder of his girlfriend's parents. The story itself wasn't very predictable. (I hate when you read a mystery /thriller and you pretty much know how it will unfold by the 3rd chapter)

This was a smartly written mystery/thriller about an intelligent and complex female protagonist. Roxane isn't some "perfect" cookie cutter private investigator. She's bi-sexual and has an on-again-off-again relationship with a woman she met in high school. She drinks a bit too much. She has some daddy issues with her dead dad and some imperfect relationships with her mom and brothers.

Blame Linwood Barclay.

At times, there were a lot of good points in this book, what with some of the protagonist's characteristics. Although to be honest, the alcoholic detective is a bit of a tired trope.

I can see why this novel is very popular because of the lead character, but after 32% I found the story progression to be uninteresting and even though the nature of the story had an inherent urgency to it, I didn't feel any sense of urgency to pick it up after I had put it down.

Combine this with the fact that I was still, 3 books later, thinking about the last Linwood Barclay book that I had read and loved, Trust Your Eyes, and the prospect of finally getting to his Promise Falls trilogy had been pulling at me ever since.

So, sorry. It was the Saturday morning of a beautiful weekend and I made the executive decision to dump this and get me some Barclay.

At the time of writing this review I am 32% into Broken Promise and enjoying it much more. No regrets!

Well written, interesting main and side characters. I look forward to reading the next in the series soon. This is the kind of book you can read in one sitting.

I loved this book. The main character is a tough, perfectly flawed woman. While I could see some of the twists and turns coming, the character development was great so I didn't mind.

I loved this book. The mystery/investigation was well-plotted and interesting, but it was Roxane’s complex character arc that really enamored me of this novel. I found Roxane to be a hugely relatable main character, and when I finished the book I felt like I wanted to spend more time with her. I’m so glad there’s a sequel!

I was annoyed with Roxanne for most of the book, but she had redeemed herself in my eyes by the end, so what was heading for a 3 star rating became a 4 star.  Medium-paced for most of the book until the very end as it reached an exciting denouement.  I might perhaps read the next in the series, maybe on audio this time.
