This is such a sweet story about a grandmother and granddaughter. It highlights the importance of holding onto heritage and history, as well as the necessity of looking for beauty in dark times. While the illustrations are beautiful, the book is text heavy. It probably wouldn't hold younger kids' attention for very long. Even older kids might need a little bit of help with the dialect that the characters use, but this isn't insurmountable.

Nana has her granddaughter, Beauty, and her cousin Victor over for the day. They plan to visit the beach so Nana can catch shrimp for their gumbo dinner that night. On their way Victor sees a friend, so they visit him and his Nana Mary. She happens to be weaving a basket from scratch. Nana and her granddaughter were just talking about Beauty's basket that morning. Here was one being made. Nana says the basket weaving like other secrets were brought from Africa.

I liked this story. There are whole pages of lines to read on one side and a page illustrating the scene on the other. Some scenes use the full spread. The impressionistic drawings by Cozbi A Cabrera are soothing to the eye. They give the story an even softer touch.
