This book is about more than its plot points. It's also about the injustice and legacy of slavery, segregation and dehumanisation. It's also about the importance of community, and how strength and integrity can be found in unexpected places. While a little slow and repetitive at times, it does paint a picture of the struggles of black communities in the segregated south, and how fine a line there was between freedom and its opposite.

beautiful, deeply moving. the ways that we treat each other can be maddening, frustrating and unbelievably cruel. but they can also be loving, respectful and kind. This book shows all of our shortcomings but makes me believe that the love, kindness and respect will win out in the end.
