“It used to disturb me at first. I thought seriously of burning the house—to reach the smell. But now I am used to it. The only thing I can think of that it is like is the colour of the paper! A yellow smell."

The yellow wallpaper remains my favourite short story of hers but all of the other ones presented in this collection had the same underlying note of feminism threaded into them which I enjoyed a lot.

I can't lie as much as this was an okay read, it definitely peaked way too soon. The book organises the stories in chronological order of publishing/writing and I really think that that makes the book as a whole quite underwhelming. You start with 'The Yellow Wallpaper' which is one of, if not the most interesting story and then within the first five stories are the 3 that I found intriguing. The highlights in this collection are 'The Yellow Wallpaper', 'The Giant Wistaria' and 'The Rocking-Chair' and the rest are all so lack lustre compared to these. I will say that despite most of the short stories not being the most riveting of writing, the extracts from Gilman's autobiography were mildly interesting. Realistically I would just advise people to find the short stories themselves rather than buy this collection but I'm still glad I read this.

This terrified me very much. I think the epistolary format was very effective in creating a suspension of disbelief in the reader, as we see the nursery through Jane’s eyes. How we treat her perspective however, is the main point of debate. When the reader examines the text as
In venturing through the ancient world [...] we examine the woman through the idea, the interest, the desire that the man has towards her, a filter extraordinarily interested in producing and maintaining a specific image of the woman herself. Therefore, we end up actually examining the prototype of the female image like it was built and lived in the collective male image, rather than the woman herself. [...] Even the will, the taste, the desire of those commissioning and those realizing images belong to the male world.
