A beautifully fun read with words incorporated into the pictures as if shape poems. Reynolds is a great author and having only read his YA before I’m fascinated but not surprised at his skill at writing picture books as well.

Reynolds and the Pymphrey brothers team up to bring a beautiful picture book about the life and work of Langston Hughes. End note by Reynolds describes how he was inspired by a photo of Maya Angelou and Amiri Baraka dancing at a 1991 gathering at the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center. The book highlights other authors and celebrates the power of words. Might be too young for the list but I'm keeping it at a 4 for now!

Read this in a bookshop, along with many others, but this is the one that’s coming home with me.

The Pumphreys' wood block illustrations are delightful as always, so full of life and meaning and joy. Jason Reynolds saw a picture of Maya Angelou dancing with Amiri Baraka at the Harlem library, and had to find out about the event. It was a party in honor of Langston Hughes, and the combination of these three poets and the party inspired this book, which honors all three of them and the power of the written word.
