This book is interesting because in alternating chapters, Robert's story is told in three different time periods: his pre-teen years when he hung out with his neighborhood friends and developed a friendship with a teacher, in his 20's where he tries to get a fresh start in a new town and keeps busy at work, and later in life when something terrible has happened and he is in pain in the dark somewhere. He has done something he cannot forgive himself and he suffers for it.The book is a mystery to what happened to lead him on the path he is on.
