Beach read filled with unlikable characters, written so earnestly that you can’t help but adore them.

I enjoyed the read, but it's not something that will go down as particularly impactful. The characters aren't always likeable, but that's intentional, and I didn't mind following them through all their thoughts and flaws.

Overall a solid book, just wasn’t my style.
It’s too fictional, the way all of the characters’ flaws come to light but get nicely wrapped into a bow at the end of the novel in the span of one or two chapters. I prefer Sally Rooney’s style of ending the book on an uncertain and ambiguous note because that’s just how life is.

I want to like Emma Straub’s books more than I do. But I just — don’t. There’s something about a lack of character evolution that leaves me feeling grimy when I finish. Like how your fingers feel after you’ve visited a used bookstore that never wipes down the shelves. I am simultaneously exhausted by the narratives and in utter adoration of the writing style. I guess - I love how it reads, and hate what I’m reading about.
